As we ring in the New Year, we can’t help but reflect on the last twelve months of our lives. 2019 marked an incredible milestone in my life, as I launched my event entertainment company, Hi-Jinx Entertainment! Though it did not come with its share of challenges, I am immensely proud of growing a business from the ground up in such a short period of time. The learning curve has been steep, and being your own boss is a 24/7 commitment, however, there is such a sense of accomplishment with having come this far.

For the entirety of my adult life, I have been entrenched in BC’s booming events industry in one capacity or another. I started off as a Lighting Technician for a Vancouver-based A/V company, and then transitioned to a Production Assistant role at a top event production firm. Shortly thereafter, I fell into the world of food and beverage and worked as an Event Planner for a few different catering companies in the Victoria and Vancouver areas. Over the years, I have seriously considering starting several businesses, but the fear of failure was my greatest deterrent. Having overcome this obstacle has been a refreshing experience, but the fear never seems to fade. Though these feelings have the capacity to drag you down and paralyze you with doubt, I have instead viewed them as an opportunity to challenge myself. The apprehensions now fuel my ambition to take Hi-Jinx to the next level and soar to even greater heights.

I am not necessarily a big advocate of creating New Year’s resolutions, but rather, SMART (specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely) goals. There is extensive research to indicate that committing your goals to written word yield a much higher rate of success, so here I have outlined some of my goals for 2020:

  1. Sign up for a wedding show – Vancouver and its surrounding areas are host to numerous bridal fairs. I would like to participate as a vendor in at least one wedding show during 2020 to showcase my service to prospective clients and brides and grooms-to-be.

  1. Regularly post up blog entries – One of my many passions in life is writing, so I would like to commit to regularly posting blogs in my website once per week.

  1. Double my bookings – Throughout the upcoming year, I would like to double my event bookings from my first year of operation.

  1. Plan (and save) for the future – My goal when launching this business was to create an interactive entertainment brand, not necessarily a photo booth company. As my business continues to grow, I would like expand to offer additional services and products to our clients.

Now that I have listed clear goals for the upcoming year, I can create a roadmap for how to accomplish these tasks, and keep myself accountable. What are your personal and business goals for the upcoming year?
